The decision to build MAKORA robustly and from teak might be one of the reasons she remains sound and strong. This is a family boat that has looked after her owners cruising the Pacific and she has been rewarded for her services in caring ownership. For a romantic voyager seeking to head off through the Pacific on an old English yacht, could there be a better option ?

MAKORA was built in 1933 for a Scotsman to a design by Captain O.M Watts. To save a little money he went originally not to a yacht builder but to a Cornish builder of fishing boats. They made a deal – but when he returned to Scotland the men of Cornwall decided the designer’s scantlings were too light for their taste and substituted 4 inch oak ribs and – since in those halcyon days such things were possible – discovered a milled stack of teak and planked her with that. She was massive - and it is the reason she has remained as good as the day she was built.
Her former owner bought her after she had sailed from England to New Zealand and has had a book published about the trip. She then sailed the Southern Hemisphere for twenty years, returning twice to California where, on her second trip back from New Zealand crewed by a man, his wife and their 13 year old daughter, her current owner bought her. Love at first sight he considers it will be love at last sight too. He has restored MAKORA to her correct original rig and avers she sails superbly.
